Hello Racing fans,
2008 has been a pretty good year for our racing program at BMSA. We decided to hold races on the last Saturday of each month (May-October excl August which happens to be the Labor Day weekend this year). I, as Racing Chairman, am pleased with the turnouts we have been having. After thunderstorms reduced our first outing in May to three boats we have come back with 10 boats in the last two races. All the races are held at Blue Marsh Lake and this year we have reintroduced the BMSA handicap system. This handicap syatem is based on the ratio of a skipper’s elapsed time to the winning time for the races used to calculate his handicap. We are intending to provide an enjoyable sailing experience using a racing format and I think it is working. Maybe it’s the hotdogs and drinks we are serving after the races! Come out for our last two races and enjoy some good fall sailing. These will be held on September 27 and October 26. October 26 is our annual Turkey race with turkeys provided to the top three finishers. Tom Stoner 610-223-3593
Hello all you Sailors out there!
If you are reading this website for the forst time you may be getting the idea that BMSA is a one man show! This is not the case- our club is very active and many people make it so. I just happened to look up our website and found it to be lacking in up-to-date entries so being much enthused re BMSA and sailing in general I have decided to make a couple postings. We do have a fine newsletter that comes out monthly. Perhaps we should be posting excerpts from the newsletter into the website.
In any event this posting will be in regard to our cruising program for 2008. Our cruising program usually consists of a Spring and Fall cruise (3 days/2 nights); 3 or 4 Vagabonds(2 days/1 night) and 1 or 2 Daysails. The venues are lakes other than Blue Marsh and the Chesapeake Bay. This year we have vagabonded to Lake Nockamixon; took the Spring cruise to the Oxford, MD area sailing the Choptank, Tred Avon, and Leadenham Creek; daysailed Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park; and daysailed the Elk River in MD. Coming up is a daysail to Nockamixon on 8/23; the Fall cruise to the Severn River and Mill Creek off Whitehall Bay; and winding up with a vagabond on October 4 & 5 to an Eastern shore location to be determined. BMSA is a sailing club of about 70 members but as you can see this is an active club. If you live in the Reading, PA area consider joining us. Tom Stoner 610-223-3593
